Learning to "Outclass the Competition"
May 15, 2009
As many as 86 students packed the Dayton Cafeteria for a seminar
titled, "Outclass the Competition … Business Etiquette
and Business Image." Leah Hawthorn, a certified business
image and etiquette coach and training facilitator for the
Protocol School of Washington, was the guest speaker. Ms.
Hawthorn works to facilitate change in the business arena by
improving individual and corporate image. She trains business men
and women from all over the world, and visits many colleges and
corporations to discuss the necessary tools to succeed in the
work place. She pointed out that statistically during a job
interview, usually only 15% of the actual interview will be based
on what you know. Credentials for the position have long since
been looked at before the interview through the applicant's
résumé and reference calls. The remaining 85% is the
presentation of oneself during the interviewing process. She has
taught students from the United States, Cairo, Egypt, London,
England, Dubai, Canada, Australia, Philippines, as well as many
other global locations. The campus was fortunate enough to
contract her for our graduates in particular, and encouraged as
many students to attend as possible. "This was not only a
success but a smash hit," one instructor said of the
seminar.
Ms. Hawthorn engaged the students in exercises using workbooks
and hands-on scenarios to improve their interviewing skills,
confidence, etiquette, image, and dress. Student volunteers came
forward and modeled their business outfits. As the student
audience watched, others were placed in situations where
role-play made them aware of the proper interviewing techniques
to use and to build their confidence. Ms. Hawthorn also put a
"Relocation Possibilities" catalog together and spent
many hours researching the programs offered at National College
and where the best jobs could be found across the country for
those areas of study. Many students were anxious to employ the
methods they learned and we are looking forward to positive
results from them on their next interviews.
